Productivity and the Return to Office Versus Remote Debate

Chart of the Week: Productivity and the Return to Office Versus Remote Debate

As the business world adjusts to the new, Post-Covid normal, business leaders continue to debate what is best for their companies. At the center of that debate is the issue of productivity.

Corporate mandates for workers to return to the office are increasing. They are also coming with additional requirements even though impatient business leaders realize they are likely to lose staff. While just 20% of respondents prefer returning to their cubicles, a Bloomberg Market Live Pulse survey found that 50% of those who work in finance would likely resign rather than spend more time in the office.

Some companies are even using return-to-office (RTO) mandates to effectively trim their workforce. AT&T recently ordered 60,000 managers to resume coming to the office while at the same time abruptly reducing the number of available offices, forcing many employees to choose between relocating or quitting.

These are tough issues, and credit executives, unfortunately, are usually caught in the middle between the top executives and their departmental staff. That is why it is essential that credit executives understand the dynamics at play with RTO and remote work. Hopefully, that understanding will help you, within the framework of your company, get the most productivity from your staff.

ResumeBuilder.com recently surveyed 1,500 full-time, corporate workers. Their findings complement the Bloomberg survey by providing additional insight into the drivers of worker productivity in RTO and remote work environments. Here are the key findings:

In contrast to these results, the youngest workers made up of 18 to 24-year-old members of Generation Z, say they are more productive in the office. They list the following as contributing factors to productivity:

When you think about it, this makes a lot of sense. Younger workers need the close participation of their managers and co-workers to fully learn their jobs. As workers mature, it is likely their personal lives become more complicated – starting a family will do that to you – making a remote work component attractive from a work-life balance perspective. Furthermore, as a more mature employee, maintaining productivity in a remote environment is more easily sustained.
